Stou Lasithiou Metochi

In the picturesque village of Kato Metochi, on the Lasithi Plateau, lies the family-run tavern To Metochi, a destination renowned for its authentic local cuisine and Cretan hospitality. The tavern generously offers its visitors unique moments and flavors, reflecting the true tradition of the region. With a focus on Cretan cooking, the dishes served are made with fresh, local ingredients, preserving the authenticity of the flavors. Every meal is a humble yet meticulously crafted culinary experience that conveys the character and gastronomic heritage of the village.

One of the main reasons we chose to visit this tavern in Kato Metochi on the Lasithi Plateau was the presence of Mrs. Elisavet. It was impossible not to notice her, as she was grilling outside the tavern, right by the road. The sight of her, with her skilled hands expertly preparing the ingredients, left a strong impression on us and became a remarkable reason to honor her with our humble presence.

The fact that the grill is placed right on the road highlights the immediate connection that can form at any moment with passersby and visitors, offering an open invitation to those who wish to taste and experience not only authentic Cretan cuisine but also the boundless hospitality of the region itself.

Our meal at the tavern began in the best possible way: a wicker basket of freshly baked, handmade bread. The aroma of the warm bread, with its crispy crust and soft crumb, filled the space, promising to perfectly accompany every dish that followed. It was the ideal introduction to a meal that honors tradition and quality.

We continued with the tzatziki, a classic appetizer that is elevated at this tavern thanks to the local ingredients used. The rich, velvety yogurt is blended with freshly grated cucumber and garlic, creating a cool, tangy combination that perfectly balances freshness and intensity.

The warm dolmades that followed were wrapped in tender vine leaves and filled with rice, flavored with select Cretan herbs. This dish, with its gentle and delicate taste, transported us to the nature of Crete, evoking memories of summer days under the sun.

One of the highlights of our lunch was the savory liver, a traditional Cretan delicacy renowned for its unique flavor. Tender and juicy, the liver is cooked with vinegar and rosemary, creating an explosive combination of tastes. The acidity of the vinegar perfectly balances the aromatic note of rosemary, making every bite a true gastronomic experience.

The climax of the meal was the skioufichta, traditional handmade Cretan pasta. Served creamy and warm, they proved to be a true masterpiece of simplicity. The perfectly cooked dough, with its characteristic texture and flavor, showcased the artistry of Cretan cuisine, where the simplest ingredients can create an outcome of exceptional taste.

Every dish at the tavern is an ode to the tradition and gastronomic heritage of Crete, offering flavors that are at once familiar and extraordinary, crafted with passion and respect for the memories of time.

The tavern To Metochi is not just a destination for good food. It is a living space where Cretan tradition comes to life through the dishes created by Mrs. Elisavet and her family. Each dish is made with wholehearted dedication and deep love for the art of cooking, reflecting the rich history and culture of the region. If you find yourself on the Lasithi Plateau, a visit to this tavern is essential, not only to enjoy authentic Cretan flavors but also to experience the unparalleled Cretan hospitality.
